user: yeah user: the whole reason im having to reinstall is because i created another partition under my main drive a few days back and hit write and it destroyed arch help: so you are literally trying to fix a partition with overwritten data? user: idk man user: help: explain plz user: so i was trying to make a dual boot for fun user: and i thought user: "oh, if i just write a new partition under my main drive i can boot into that partition on the other os and be fine!" user: and turnes out that wasnt the case user: so now im stuck here help: did you shrink the arch partition's filesystem? help: before resizing the partition user: no help: well help: there's your problem user: i thought that since i had a few hundred gigs left in storage i could just seperate 100 gigs for the other partition help: to shrink a partition with data already on it, you'd need to: help: 1) unmount the partition help: 2) shrink the partition's filesystem to the new partition's size help: 3) then shrink the partition help: what you effectively did, was, unfortunately, scramble a ton of data user: ah user: aka arch no workie help: yeppppp help: i hope you had backups! user: oof user: i did however manage to do a fresh install of mint for the time being and that worked help: you basically overwrote whatever data was overlapped between the new partition's size and the old, remaining partition's filesystem length user: so that explains why i couldnt access my old files when i got into the new install user: "i hope you had backups!" unfortunately not help: i am sorry you had to find out this way user: all i remember doing is making my main one be 300gb and the other one for the dual boot 100gb user: its very vague memory help: so you never used the tool resize2fs user: no help: well. help: for the future, that's the tool you use to resize a filesystem user: i remember using some sort of fdisk command, selecting my hard drive, hitting write, it giving me a message saying it might ruin my thing (spoiler it did), i disregarded that, and continued anyway user: that night i shut down my pc before bed user: then the day after i got home from school user: turned on my computer user: and it just didnt work user: grub got mad help: i would too user: yeah user: me now woudl too user: anyway
